The shoe that doesn't need to prove anything
There are shoes you wear. And then there are shoes that say something about you. Birkenstocks belong to the latter category – and always have, it just took the world a while to understand it. What started as an orthopedic staple in the seventies is now present in the wardrobes of fashion editors, designers, and all those who supposedly don't care about fashion.
The Arizona, the Boston, the Zürich: they all share the same characteristic. They don't seem to be trying to be anything. The footbed is visible. The buckles are functional. Nothing is hidden, nothing staged. And that's precisely why they work with almost everything. A flowing linen dress in beige, loose and uncreased – paired with the Arizona in black. Wide, rolled-up straight-leg jeans with a simple white T-shirt – paired with the Boston in natural leather. These combinations require no explanation.
What makes Birkenstocks so reliable in styling is their neutrality. They don't merge into a look; they stand beside it. This gives them a presence that more expensive, elaborate shoes often cannot achieve. And once you understand how that works, you rarely reach for anything else.
The deliberate break
Birkenstock's true potential lies not in the obvious, but in the contrast. The shoe is most effective where it is least expected, and this very surprise is its styling principle. A structured blazer, a tailored coat, a heavy-fabric midi skirt: all of these are not broken by a Birkenstock underneath, but completed.
The combination with socks is particularly effective, and this is not meant ironically. White, ribbed socks with the Arizona, the Mayari, the Milano. This combination has evolved in recent years from a style faux pas to a stylistic device. It provides a counterpoint to everything that seems too slick, too polished, too contrived. Worn with a mini skirt or loose-fitting cargo pants, it's the smallest fashion provocation one can make, yet one with impact.
The principle behind it is always the same: Birkenstock grounds. Whatever happens above it—elegance, casualness, experimental flair—the shoe brings it back to reality. Birkenstocks demand no special care in styling. They only demand that you don't put too much against them. The more naturally you wear them, the more right they look.
